Summer 1 Learning
As we wrap up another exciting half term, we’re thrilled to share what our young explorers have been up to! It’s been an action-packed few weeks filled with fun, learning, and a bit of adventure!
In Mathematics, we've dived into measuring length, weight, capacity, and temperature. The children have been busy measuring length and height using centimetres and metres. They even took metre sticks on a little adventure around the school, measuring large objects along the way. It was great to see their curiosity spark! We also used balance scales and weights to weigh all kinds of things in grams and kilograms. Plus, we got hands-on with thermometers to measure the temperature in different areas of the school—definitely made math feel relevant and exciting! Our lessons also introduced fractions, where we explored halves, quarters, and thirds in amounts, shapes, and numbers.

Our English lessons were also a blast! We shared the brilliant story "Wild" by Emily Hughes, about a girl raised by animals in the forest. The children loved following her journey and how she ended up being taken by humans. They enjoyed retelling the story and ended up creating missing posters and writing character descriptions. They even crafted a newspaper article about her kidnapping! To top it off, they made their own versions of the story, choosing different animals to be raised in funny ways. We then learnt all about explanation texts. The children created their own explanation texts about the lifecycles of sunflowers.
In Science, we’ve been fascinated by how seeds grow into full-grown plants. The children learned about what’s inside a seed and what they need to thrive. We investigated what happens if a seed misses out on its essentials, and the children spotted the differences between healthy and unhealthy plants, as well as how plants adapt to their surroundings. A highlight was our trip to Kew Gardens, where the children took part in a workshop learning how plants survive in places like deserts and rainforests. They were amazed by barrel cacti, prickly pear trees, giant water lilies, and even Venus fly traps!
In Geography, we took a virtual trip to Australia! The children explored the various states and territories, the amazing wildlife, and what makes Australia unique. They were particularly fascinated to find out that Christmas Day is in the middle of summer there!
In Design Technology, we focused on structures, where the children set out to build a proper chair for Baby Bear. They got creative with 3D shapes using playdough and tested which ones were the sturdiest. Then, they made their own 3D shapes out of card and tested how many books these structures could hold. Using what they learned about stability, they collaborated to create some very comfy chairs for Baby Bear!
In Religious Education, we dove into the question, "What is God like for Christians?" The children listened to a range of Bible stories and chatted about what these stories mean for Christians. They also made connections with stories about Prophet Muhammad from the Qur'an, noticing the shared themes of kindness and respect for others.
This half term has been jam-packed with fun! We celebrated VE Day with flag-making and a lovely picnic while listening to music from the 1940s. They even got to see a world champion scooter rider do backflips in our hall! All in all, it’s been a fantastic half term, and we can’t wait for more exciting adventures in the next one!
