Our Learning - Spring 1

Spring 1 - Week 5

This week in Whale Class, we enjoyed Number Day! The children started the day by working as a whole class to build an array city. The children each had a multiplication sentence that they needed to represent as an array. We combined our buildings to make a city. We then worked on dot to dots, number code breakers and played math games on Purple Mash. In the afternoon, we had a carousel of math activities that we enjoyed with the other classes. We helped children from Dolphins and Bumblebees with different maths activities.

In English, we have been writing a recount about our trip to Woburn. We have been busy editing them and look forward to sharing them when they are published!

Spring 1 - Week 4

What an amazing week we have had!

On Thursday, we had our first trip in Year 2 to Woburn Safari Park. We got see and meet so many different animals. Our day started on the road safari, we had a tour guide called Helen who told us so many fascinating facts. On the road safari, we saw camels, bison, buffalo, ostriches, elephants and zebras. Then, we entered the carnivore zone. We saw a tiger, wolves, black bears and lions. We had lions come right up to our coach, monkeys jumping on the roof and wallabies all around us! We all had a fantastic day.

Spring 1 - Week 3

This week, we have written a newspaper report about a giant, troll or dinosaur that we chased away from Cranktown Kingdom. The children innovated our model text to create their own newspaper reports. We learnt about all the different features included in newspaper reports, including time and place adverbials, quotes and pictures with captions.

In PE, we have been loving yoga! The children learnt a range of under the sea poses, including jellyfish, crab and shark.

In Geography, we learnt about the equator. The children described what the equator is and discovered where it was located. We created climate maps to show how the equator helps us understand the climate of a country and the continents. We are located the North and South Pole, and discussed how the equator shows us the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere.

Spring 1 - Week 2

This week in Whale Class, we have been experimenting with instruments in Music. We were challenged with finding an instrument to replicate safari animal sounds. We then created rhythms with these instruments that may sound like an elephant stomping or lion roaring.

In Spanish, we have been learning the colours. We have been brilliant at picking this up! We played a range of games to test our vocabulary knowledge.

In Art, we created relief maps. These are 3D maps made from a range of materials. We enjoyed thinking about what material we could use to create roads, the River Thames and houses. We are looking forward to continuing these next week.

Spring 1 - Week 1

What a busy week we have had in Whale Class! We were very pleased to welcome the children back on Wednesday after what we hope was a peaceful holiday for you all.

On Wednesday, we started our day with PSHE. Our new learning this half term is all about sharing our dreams and setting goals. The class were set a challenge of passing a box filled with marbles around without it making a sound. We spoke about the small steps we had to consider to achieve this goal. These steps included: working as a team, having your hands ready to receive the box, moving slowly and taking our time.

In Maths, we have started our new unit on money! The children have been learning to recognise the different coins and notes. They have also been counting in pence and in pounds.

On Friday, the children took part in the Great Fire of London workshop. They had an absolutely brilliant day and were engaged throughout. The morning involved a wide range of practical activities to help them understand the lives of those that lived in 1666. The children participated in rat catching, using fire hooks, making medicine and perfumes, producing wax candles and creating button moulds from clay, plus much more! In the afternoon, the children created a timeline and took part in telling the story of the events of the fire. The workshop finished with a button mould being chosen to make into a real metal button, the children were fascinated!

We have thoroughly enjoyed our first week back and look forward to next weeks learning.
