Spring 1 Learning
As we take a moment to look back on our learning this term, it’s hard to believe how much the children have packed into these last few weeks! It has been such a joy watching them grow and learn across a range of subjects, and one of our absolute highlights was our fabulous trip to Whipsnade Zoo. It really brought our lessons on animals, habitats, and adaptations to life; seeing the animals up close was a truly exhilarating experience for everyone!
In Design Technology (DT), The children have been busy investigating linkages and mechanisms, experimenting with different ways to create movement. They designed their very own monsters, finalising their projects into moving creations. Watching their imaginations come alive as they crafted their moving monsters was an absolute joy!
We also took part in a health and fitness workshop, where the children engaged in a myriad of activities aimed at highlighting the significance of maintaining a balanced diet—fruit and vegetables galore! Concepts such as the importance of exercise, hygiene, and drinking plenty of water were all emphasised. To top it off, they enjoyed an afternoon fitness workshop that opened their eyes to the impact exercise has on their bodies. It was uplifting to see the children energetic and enthusiastic about their health!
In our geography lessons, we shifted our focus to hot and cold places across the globe, examining the equator and learning how to locate different regions on the map. We also explored the various human and physical features of these areas, which linked beautifully with our science learning. It was interesting to see how different environments affect the creatures that inhabit them, and the children showcased impressive skills in identifying diverse landscapes.
One particularly engaging activity we undertook was an investigation about blubber and how it aids animals in cold habitats. The children had a hilarious time when they dared to touch ice with their bare hands; and then, to their amazement, they donned a blubber glove. The difference was astounding! They quickly understood why blubber is crucial for survival in chilly climates, and it sparked some delightful discussions.
In English, we embarked on creative writing based on the delightful text Meerkat Mail. The children thoroughly enjoyed crafting postcards, honing their skills in using commas in lists, expanded noun phrases, apostrophes for contractions, and conjunctions. Following our fabulous trip to Whipsnade Zoo, they wrote recounts of their experiences, making use of time adverbials, adjectives, adverbs, and apostrophes for possession. The children delightfully brought their memories to life with their words!
In Maths, we turned our focus to money, and I must say, the children excelled in this area! They explored how to find totals, make a pound, and calculate change, which sparked many practical discussions and activities. It’s wonderful to see them apply their new skills outside the classroom as well!
Overall, this term has been filled with astonishing learning experiences, and it has truly been a pleasure to witness the children’s growth and enthusiasm. I look forward to seeing where their curiosity takes them next!
