Our Learning - Summer 2

Summer 2 - Week 2

In Geography, we have started to learn about orienteering. We created a map using mats, benches and cones. We had to help our partners navigate around the map and we asked them to stand in certain places.

In History, we have continued to learn about Queen Victoria and her amazing life. We have used all of our learning to create fact files.

In Maths, we have continued learning about statistics. We have been learning about block digraphs this week. The children have learnt how to read data from them to answer questions and have created their own.

In DT, Whale Class have learnt about structures. We considered which 3D makes the strongest pillar. Using card and tape, we created a cuboid, triangular prism and cylinder. We balanced books on top until they collapsed. The children discovered that the cylinder won because it has no corners, the other shapes buckled at the corners. We then created our own cylinders, we thought carefully about which would be the strongest cylinders, the taller or shorter ones? The thinner or wider ones? The ones with no overlap or the ones with lots of overlapping card?

Summer 2 - Week 1

What a busy first week back! We hope you all had a lovely break.

In Maths, we have started to learn about statistics. We have looked at tally charts and tables, the children have created their own tallys and tables to collect and gather data about the class including; favourite colours, favourite sports.

In English, we have read a new story called Major Glad, Major Dizzy. It is about two cheeky Victorian toys that get dropped under the floorboards by a young girl called Amelia.  Major Glad and Major Dizzy get up to all sorts of mischief as decades pass. The book follows a timeline from 1830 - present day when the toys are eventually found once the new owners of the house rip up the floorboards. The children absolutely loved finding out that Amelia was the current owners Great Grandma and the owner finding the Victorian soldiers is true.

In Science, we have been learning about habitats. We went to the nature garden and drew a map, we then walked around the nature garden looking closely for microhabitats and added them to our maps.

This week we had our first play with Chennestone Year 2s, we really enjoyed meeting our future classmates. Each of us shared the name of a new friend we made!
