Who are our real life superheroes?

The BIG Question: Who are our real life superheroes?

We all know about the famous superheroes with special powers! We also know that some superheroes do not wear capes but uniforms like doctors, nurses, firemen. However, our history in the UK is full of heroes that made a difference on how we lived today. This term we will be studying great heroes of our past: Grace Darling was a true inspiration and we will find out the true significance of this event on lifeboat crews today.  We will also learn about Emmeline Pankhurst and Emily Davidson, women who change the world for us today.

Week 1

It has been a great week back for Dolphin class! This week in maths we have been introducing turns and linking back to our previous learning of fractions using quarters and halves. In English our new text is based on Oliver Jeffers - 'Lost and Found'.

We have drawn out our story map following the Talk4Writing style.

In history we started to learn about Grace Darling and why she is considered a "Real life Superhero!".

We recapped our learning of plants and we planted some vegetables for school fair next Saturday 18th June. We created advertising posters to sell these vegetables at our fair.

Well done to all of Dolphins for completing their phonic screenings!

Week 2

Another busy week in Dolphin class this week! We have enjoyed the sunny weather even though it has been hot!

In English, we finished reading 'Lost and Found'. We found some 'lost toys' and created labels for the toys. We sequenced the story using pictures and wrote some super sentences for each picture. We then used drama to act out the story of Lost and Found.

In maths, we finished our unit on position and direction. We learned our left from our right and learned how to give directions.

In computing, we used the laptops and learned about spreadsheets. Dolphins learned that we use spreadsheets to store information. We learned about columns and rows and inputted information into the spreadsheet.

In geography, we recapped our learning of the UK. We learned about the seas surronding the UK. We used maps and atlases to help us to name the seas surronding the UK.

In history, we have continued learning about Grace Darling. We are really enjoying our learning so far this term and we are excited to learn more.

We are also looking forward to the school fair on Saturday 18th June. We hope to see you all there laugh

Week 3

We have had a very fun week in Dolphins! We finished our English text 'Lost and Found'. Dolphins wrote some super diary enteries where they pretended to be the boy in the story and they penguin arrived at their door.

In maths, we have continued looking at place value to 100. We looked at partioning numbers and comparing numbers. We got to use numicon and base 10 and we really enjoyed these lessons.

In history, we have continued learning about Grace Darling. We looked at how Grace's fame continued after she died and how people made things to celebrate her life. We drew and decorated coins in honour of Grace.

In geography, we looked at the Isle of Stuary and where we live and compared both areas. We read a Katie Morag story and then we wrote a postcard from Granny Mainland to her friend describing Stuary.

In art, we looked at tones and shades. We painted a landscape including the sea, sand and the sun. Dolphins painted some very impressive art.

Week 5

This week Dolphins had another very exciting week of learning!

In maths we started looking at money following our Whiterose Scheme. We had lots of pratical lessons where we enjoyed using and learning about the different coins and notes.

In English, we started learning about prefixes. We linked this learning to our learning on the suffragettes. We learned about Emmeline Pankhurst and her role in how women got the right to vote. We created suffragette wanted posters.

We started 'Changing me unit' in our RSE learning. We have started to build on from the childrens learning in reception when they looked at how we grow and how we have changed since they were babies. We have started to identify the basic parts associated with the human body and we have also briefly looked at how animals have offspring which grow into adults.

A massive thank you to all adults this year for supporting our Year 1 team! heartIt was a pleasure to teach our little Dolphins. They have worked extremely hard this year and they should be proud of themselves.smiley We hope you all have a lovely summer and see you all in Septemeber laugh
