Spring Term 1 - Would you like to go on a journey?

Week 1 – 4th -6th January 2023 This week we have been very busy settling back in after the Christmas holidays’. We hope you all managed to get some rest among all the excitement! This week we have been measuring our class flower, which is now at 27 cubes tall. I wonder if it will grow more over the weekend. We have been reading different books this week to help us settle. For our new topic we have been looking at Sunbury, the children have been looking at images and maps of where they live and thinking about what they do they are how they get there. We have even been trying to spot where we live on the maps. We have also reflected on their holiday news and any firework they have seen by recreating them in the messy play. Thank you to everyone who sent in a photo of their holidays, the children loved looking at them.

Week 2 – 9th – 13th January - This week we read the book ‘Naughty Bus’ by Jan Oke. Bumblebee Class were very excited to create their own naughty vehicle stories, and used aeroplanes, trucks, helicopters, and cars to get up to all sorts of mischief. Naughty Bus is a cheeky London bus. We looked at all the famous landmarks he would pass in town, and we made them from different items in our classroom. In numeracy, we have started to look at patterns. The children took this opportunity to use the iPad’s to find patterns in the classroom and they did a really good job at it! Make sure you carry on spotting patterns everywhere you go.

Week 3 16th - 20th January – This week we have taken a journey to the continent of Africa. We looked at maps to see all the different countries they have, looked at some pictures of animals that Miss Wade saw on her travels, and tried some fruits from our book ‘Handa’s Surprise’. We looked at repeating patterns and some animal patterns to help us create our own. We even did some colour mixing to investigate what happens when we mix our colours.

Week 4 – 23rd – 27th January 2022 This week have travelled to Asia in time for the Chinese New Year celebrations. We learnt all about the Chinese landmarks, food they eat, and what animals live there. Our class book was ‘The Great Race’ by Emily Hiles, where we learnt how they chose the Chinese Zodiac order. In numeracy we learnt all about number 1! We also looked at the tiger’s pattern. We explored what happens when we mix red and yellow, then added the black stripes. Did you know they are the biggest cat in the world! We explored what happens when we mix red and yellow, then added the black stripes.

Week 5 – 30th January – 3rd February – This week we went for a wonder in the rainforest in South America. We explore who lives in the Amazon and what the weather is like. The children mixed lots of greens together and used their motor skills to cut out animals who live there to make their own Amazon rainforest. This week we read ‘"Slowly, slowly, slowly," said the sloth’ by Eric Carle, and thought about how we would move if we were sloths. We also learnt about the third biggest cat in the world, the Jaguar! We all enjoyed singing Five Speckled with the sensory trays and in numeracy we learnt all about number 2! On Friday we all LOVED Number Day! Well done to everyone who dressed up and learnt all about their numbers!

Week 6 – 6th – 10th February – This week we have been exploring the Arctic and Antarctica. Did you know that polar bears and penguins live poles apart? This week we have been reading ‘Poles Apart’ by Jeanne Willis and bumblebee class have learnt that polar bears live in the north and penguins live in the south.. We have been exploring different textures and how to make different shades of blue to make our icy pictures. In numeracy we have been looking at weight and recapping numbers 1 and 2 by investigating in the sensory trays. We also looked at shape in our penguin tray. This week was mental health week for children. For this we look at our own feelings and emotions. We read ‘The Colour Monster’ and thought about how it is ok to feel different emotions. The children have also loved playing doctors this week and have been treating all the patients in class! Thank you to everyone who came to see all the children’s hard work on Friday. I know bumblebee class was excited to show all the work they have done this half term!
