Our Learning - Autumn 1

Week 1.

What a wonderful first week we have had in Year 2! It was so lovely to welcome the children back to school. We have spent lots of time this week discussing routines and expectations of the classroom, as well as starting our new topics.

This half term, we are learning about the continents and mapping the world. In Geography, we created maps of the world using paper plates and continents jigsaws. We played a fun game with our partners called 'Splat the Continent!'. You may have heard us singing a catchy song to help us learn the continents.

In Art, we will be exploring different forms of art this half term. We started by creating patterns, we used a range of items in the classroom to create repeating patterns.

In Computing, we started our new topic by learning about online safety. We learnt how to search safely on Purple Mash, and got some tips on searching safely on Google.

We have had an amazing first week getting to know each other and settling into our new class, we look forward to continuing next week.

Have a lovely weekend!

Week 2.

This week in Year 2, we have continued to learn about mapping out our world. In geography, the children used atlases and songs to learn the names and locations of the 5 oceans.

In Science, the children have been learning about life processes using 'MRS GREN'. They have been exploring what makes something living, dead or never been alive.

In Art, the children went outside and explored different textures by using a crayon and paper to take rubbings. The children were fascinated with the results and got really creative!

In English, we worked together to write a travel journal using our learning. The children remembered to use time conjunctions, first person and adjectives. The children will write a travel journal independently next week, we are looking forward to reading their amazing writing!

Week 3.

This week we have had a fabulous week! We took part in a workshop, where we learnt about a new game called Dragonball. It was a mixture of many different sports, including Rugby, Netball and Football. We all really enjoyed the workshop and look forward to playing Dragonball at lunch and break times.

In Art, we learnt about a technique called Frottage. We used our rubbings from last week to carefully rip sections and shapes to create new pictures. We all thought of some incredibly creative ideas and enjoyed hosting a gallery in the classroom to look at each other’s work.

In Maths, we have been comparing objects and numbers using greater than, less than and equal to symbols.

In English, we wrote our independent travel journals. We wrote descriptions for Japanese Gardens, African Safaris and London. We edited our writing then used Purple Mash to type and publish our journals.

Week 4.

This week we had a visitor from the Dogs Trust. We learnt about the fived rules of keeping safe around dogs and how to say hello to them.

In Science, we have been learning about the life processes that makes something a living, dead or never alive thing. We moved around the school and selected objects, we used MRS GREN to help us determine whether the object was alive, dead or never alive.

In Computing, we learnt about algorithms. We used Lego to understand what an algorithm is, we built Lego towers and staircases following the instructions. We then used this learning to code a working airport with planes and helicopters taking off.

Week 5.

This week in maths, we have started to learning about addition and subtraction. We have been revising number bonds to 10, creating fact families using 3 numbers and learnt about related facts.

This month is Black History Month. On Monday, we had an assembly where we found out about what Black History Month is. The theme this year is ‘celebrating our sisters’. Year 2 have been learning all about Chelsea and England footballer Lauren James. We used our previous art learning of taking rubbings to add texture to create a portrait of Lauren James. We drew Lauren’s face by tracing a template.

In Computing, we have continued to learn about coding and algorithms. We used codes to create our own fairy tales.

Week 6

In year 2 this week, we have been learning about living, dead and never alive things. We learnt about the acronym MRS GREN to help us remember the seven life processes. The children have used all their science learning from this half term to create information posters to teach other children about what makes something a living thing.

In art, the children learnt last week how to use tone and shadow to create 3D pictures. This week, we are now using colour and tone to create 3D pictures. We created beautiful pictures of the planets.

We have been learning all about Christianity this half term. We have used stories from the Bible, songs and videos of people sharing their thoughts to help us find out what Christians believe God is like and how they would describe God. This week, we learnt about the story Jonah and the Whale, the children discussed what Christian’s would learn from this story.

Week 7.

What a wonderful week we’ve had! On Tuesday, the children took part in a Continents Day. The children travelled to different continent and completed a range of activities, the children learnt about different cultures and traditions from these continents. We started the day be listening to South American music including, samba, tango and salsa. Salsa music was a firm favourite! We then tried out chair drumming to South American music. We were really good at it!

Then we visited Africa, we learnt about the meaning behind a range of different masks from different communities. We used images to design, paint and create our own masks, The children thought carefully about which features they liked from the different mask and used them on their own masks.

We then travelled to Asia, where we learnt a bit about Bhangra Dance. We loved watching the videos of the dancers. The children then followed a Bhangra dance teacher to learn 5 steps.

Finally, we travelled to Oceania where we made our own Pavlova. The children chopped up the fruit, put the cream on and enjoyed trying the desert.

We had an amazing day and learnt so much about different continents and countries.

We hope you all have a lovely half term.
